Formed in 1954, The New Zealand Opera Company was the first attempt at a national opera company and employed professional New Zealand artists. It began with small-scale productions before undertaking ambitious touring shows. The Company ceased in 1971, and was followed by the National Opera of New Zealand (1979-1982) and from 2000, New Zealand Opera, which continues to perform today.
